The roadtrip of a lifetime leaves Cape Town early morning and heads to Oudtshoorn in the semi-arid "Klein Karoo" via Route 62. En route we visit Graham Beck Wines close to Robertson, where they make some of South Africa's most awarded wines. Here you will be treated to the De Luxe tasting session and opportunity to buy a bottle or two. We then travel through Robertson, Ashton and Montagu. If you are interested we can also visit Joubert-Tradauw Private Cellar just before Barrydale. Thereafter we go to Diesel & Créme in Barrydale for a lovely lunch break at this vintage style diner.
After lunch we continue along Route 62 and stop off at Ronnies Sex Shop for a photo opportunity. We pass Ladismith and then travel through the beautiful Huisrivier Pass, next is Calitzdorp and then we end our days journey in Oudtshoorn.
We will stay at the 4 star Chandelier Game Lodge & Ostrich Show Farm. After you have settled and refreshed in your room, we will go on a tour to see the ostriches. The evening you will be spoilt to a delicious 3 course meal of traditional South African cuisine, with the emphasis on superb ostrich and venison dishes. The next morning you will be treated to an early morning game drive where you will see some of the 23 species of antelope, giraffes and so much more from the comfort of game viewing Land Rovers. This will be followed by a full English breakfast. (This is the tour procedure from 1 October, see winter itinery below)
Our journey continues after breakfast as me make our way to the Cango Caves for a 1 hour tour of this spectacular underground wonder of the Klein Karoo. Situated in a limestone ridge parallel to the well known Swartberg Mountains, you will find the finest dripstone caverns, with their vast halls and towering formations. After this experience we travel over the Swartberg Pass to Prins Albert. Much of the Swartberg is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will pass through Prins Albert and go to Matjiesfontein.
At this lush oasis in the Little Karoo, named Matjiesfontein we will enjoy a delicious and traditional lunch. Here you can stroll around and view it's charming history and museums. Matjiesfontein was founded in 1884 by the legendary and energetic Scottish railway man, James Douglas Logan. The village established itself as a fashionable Victorian health spa, and is now well known for its splendid historical buildings and a peace and timelessness that is rare in modern-day South Africa...
