Bhutan often referred to as the ‘Land of the Thunder Dragon’ or ‘the last Shangri La’ on earth, is situated in the lap of the Eastern Himalayas between India and the People's Republic of China. Covering an area of 38,394 sq km, the tiny Himalayan Kingdom is one of the most isolated nations in the world. It is in the relatively unexplored pockets of Asia, which allows only a limited number of discerning travelers to preserve its fragile environment and culture in its magical purity.
This country of rolling hills and deep crags exudes immense charm. The mountains are magnificent, the forests are dense, the people are delightful, the air is pure, the architecture is inspiring, simple religious beliefs permeate every aspect of life and the art is exemplary. Like timeless images from the past, the traveler encounters the full glory of this ancient land through its strategic fortresses known as Dzongs, numerous ancient temples, monasteries, and stupas that dot the countryside, prayer flags that flutter along the high ridges, wild animals that abound in dense forests, and the warm smile of its friendly people.
Day 1 : Arrival in Bagdogra and Transfer to Phuentsholing Travel time: Around 6 hours, 145 KMS.
You'll start your journey in Bagdogra, India, and cross the border into Bhutan to reach Phuentsholing. This day is primarily for travel, with the evening available for you to explore Phuentsholing.
You'll stay overnight in Phuentsholing.
Day 2 : Phuentsholing to Thimphu with Road Sightseeing Travel time: Around 5 hours, 160 KMS.
After breakfast, you'll embark on a road trip from Phuentsholing to Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. Along the way, you'll have the opportunity to enjoy scenic views of the Himalayan mountains and the Bhutanese countryside. Upon arrival in Thimphu, you'll check into your hotel. If time allows, you can explore the local markets or simply relax in Thimphu.
You'll spend the night in Thimphu.
Day 3 : Thimphu to Punakha Travel time: Around 2 hours, 73.3 km.
This day involves a journey to Punakha with some sightseeing stops on the way, including Dochula Pass. In Punakha, you'll visit Punakha Dzong, Suspension Bridge, and explore local attractions. In the evening, you'll return to Thimphu.
You'll stay overnight in Thimphu
Day 4 : Thimphu Sightseeing - Stay Paro
Travel time: Around 1:30 hours, 50 km You'll spend the day exploring Thimphu's attractions, which include Buddha Dordenma, Tashichho Dzong, National Memorial Chorten, and Simply Bhutan. Optional visits to the Takin Preserve or the Folk Heritage Museum can also be considered if time allows. In the evening, you'll drive to Paro.
You'll stay overnight in Paro.
Day 5 : Hike to Tiger's Nest - Hike time: Around 4-5 hours, altitude: 10,245 ft, 6.4 kms.
This day will begin with an early breakfast. You'll embark on a challenging but rewarding hike to the iconic Tiger's Nest Monastery. You'll have ample time to explore the monastery. Here you can focus on meditation in the most relieving and free environment. Hot Stone Bath after the hike. In the evening, you'll return to Paro.
Your overnight stay will be in Paro.
Day 6 : Paro to Phuentsholing Travel time: Around 5 hours, 148 KMS.
After breakfast, you'll drive back from Paro to Phuentsholing. Upon reaching Phuentsholing, you'll check into your hotel. This day allows you to relax or explore the town at your own pace perhaps for souvenir shopping or savoring local cuisine in Phuentsholing.
You'll spend the night in Phuentsholing.
Day 7 : Transfer to Bagdogra Airport Travel time: Around 6 hours, 145 KMS.
On the final day, after breakfast and check-out from your hotel in Phuentsholing, you'll be transferred to Bagdogra Airport for your departure.
This marks the end of your memorable trip to Bhutan.
