After driving for 2 1⁄2 hours through stunning scenery of lush green hills and valleys (Rwanda is known as “Land of a Thousand Hills”) we will arrive to Kinigi after crossing Ruhengeri town.
Dinner and overnight at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge
Day 3 : Kinigi - Volcanoes Np - Kinigi
After early breakfast take a short drive (approx. 10 minutes) to Volcanoes National Park Headquarters, home of the endangered mountain gorilla, at the base of Sabinyo Mountain (one of the Virunga Volcanoes). There you will meet up with excellent local guides/rangers and trackers, who will give a talk on the etiquette of gorilla trekking. Thereafter, hike into the forest where the gorillas were seen the night before and track from that point. Thereafter, enjoy lunch at the lodge and free* afternoon/evening to relax.
In Rwanda, there are 10 habituated gorilla groups that can be viewed by tourists. Each group can be visited by a maximum of 8 people per day and the visit lasts only 1 hour.
The trekking can take from 1 to 8 hours and climb to altitudes in excess of 7,500 feet. The terrain is rough and at times muddy. Although the hike is physically demanding the beauty of the forest and surrounding scenery make the trekking worthwhile. Once the gorillas are located all fatigue is forgotten, as the experience is often described as being the most profound natural history experience in the world. Cameras and plenty of fast speed film is recommended. It can rain at a few minutes notice; hence waterproof clothing is a good essential including zip lock bags for cameras and film. It is important to take plenty of water.
Optional (not included): you can go for a guided eco village walk (gifts/presents are expected by the villagers visited) and visit the market. We will have the chance to meet members of the Batwa (Pygmy). They are already assimilated into the local community but the Twa were the original inhabitants of the Great Lakes region.
