For the Incas, the great mountain Apu Salkantay was the home of the gods (in Quechua, Apu means “mountain god”). The highest peak visible from Machu Picchu, this gigantic mountain continues to be important to the descendants of the Incas, the Quechua people of the high Andes, and to safeguard walkers in the highlands. As we walk below the sacred mountain Salkantay, we will be following trails that touch upon white glaciers, and we will pass Quechua livestock herding communities.Flights to Peru and Cusco

Tips
Day 1 : Cusco - Pincopata Ecocamp
This first day offers the choice to visit a stunning Canyon and enjoy an easy hike to the Condor view point. Alternatively, travelers may opt to visit two sacred archaeological ruins, one an hour from Cusco and one twenty minutes from the first night’s accommodation.
Condor Canyon
We will pick you up from your hotel at 8:30am and head north out of the city before arriving at the small village of Chonta where we begin our one hour hike towards the condor viewing point. The viewpoint offers the opportunity to observe flora and fauna native to the environment, as well as the Apurimac Canyon and River. Most tourists do not arrive until after noon which guarantees a quiet environment to observe the giants that share the sky with hawks, eagles and even seagulls. Here we will enjoy a lunch-box specially prepared for the tour before returning by the same path to Chonta to catch our private transport to the first Ecocamp.
Day 2 : Pincopata Ecocamp - Soray Ecocamp
After breakfast, we will drive 15 minutes to the start of our trail in Marcoccasa. From here we start with a short uphill hike, then continue walking through an aqueduct overlooking the spectacular Río Blanco Valley and the snowy peaks of Salkantay and Humantay before arriving at Soray Ecocamp in time for lunch.
In the afternoon, you can schedule a relaxing massage, a horseback ride, or simply choose to stroll around and enjoy the breathtaking views that surround our camp.
Option Challenging: Pincopata – Soray Ecocamp – Glacial Lake
In the afternoon, you can choose to hike to the glacial Lake Humantay nestled at the base of the southern side of Mountain Humantay. This hike is the same as the one on day 3 with the difference that is done at a faster pace.
Day 3 : Soray Ecocamp - Glacial Lake – Soray / Pincopata Ecocamp
After a hearty breakfast we will set off for our hike to the Humantay Glacial Lake along a private path away from the crowds. After an hour or two, depending on our pace, the glistening glacier will appear with the ethereal turquoise lake at its base. We will enjoy the impressive lake from above while having our morning snack and then descend to touch its gleaming waters and take some incredible photos before we return to our camp in Soray where we’ll enjoy a delicious lunch.
The final night will either be spent in Soray or Pincopata Ecocamp. In both camps we will enjoy a relaxing afternoon and a wonderful three-course meal.
Option Challenging: Salkantay Pass
This option transports us up into the clouds; to Abra Salkantay. After breakfast, we will begin our trek through the bottom of the valley, gradually starting to ascent while crossing several small pampas. The challenging final climb to the Abra Pass will be rewarded with spectacular views of the south face of the snowy and wild Salkantay.
In the Pass, we will have time to celebrate our accomplishment before descending to a warmer spot to enjoy our lunch before returning to Soray.
Day 4 : Soray / Pincopata Ecocamp - Cusco
After breakfast at our Ecocamp, we will get ready to board our transportation to take us back to Cusco.
