Sikkim : The Kanchenjunga Trek

A land of high mountains, monasteries, orchids and butterflies, dense forests and clear streams, Sikkim is perfect trekking country. Birdlife is prolific, and wild alpine flowers grow in profusion. Forests of Rhododendron, when in bloom (spring), provide a vivid splash of colour.
The trail starts at Yuksum, with a sunrise over mountains. A beautiful climb through dense forests, with magnolia, rhododendron, blue poppies and orchids in abundance. Black and brown Himalayan bear, musk deer and a, variety of other wild animals inhabit the area. After visiting a small village of Tibetan refugees, the trail moves on to Dzongri with a magnificent view of the Kanchenjunga massif. The peaks of Jupuno, Kabru and Pandim, as well as some of the mountains of Nepal and Tibet now comes into view. The Gocha - La offers a spectacular and close view of Kanchenjunga.
Day 1 : Delhi - Bagdogra - Darjeeling
Arrive Delhi. Met upon arrival and assisted in connecting flight to Bagdogra. Met upon arrival at Bagdogra. Drive by coach to Darjeeling. Afternoon /evening at leisure. Meals and overnight stay at hotel.
Day 2 : Darjeeling : (2134 Mts)
Half day sightseeing.
The mighty Kanchenjunga, third highest mountain in the world, towers above this charming town like a gigantic ship floating upon a sea of clouds. In the distance, Mt.Everest retains its aloofness. The town itself is a typical Indian "hill-station", catering mainly to a large influx of plains people escaping the summer heat. There is "The Mall", of course, a promenade with 'fashionable' stores alongside and Kanchenjunga playing hide seek in the skies above. The lower regions of the town are teeming with colorful tribesmen working or trading on seasonal basis. All around the town are picturesque tea-plantations and a visit to them is a must. On the way you might encounter the famous "toy-train" huffing up the hills from Siliguri.
Day 3 : Darjeeling - Yuksum (1630 Mts)
Begin the day with a spectacular view of Kanchenjunga at sunrise, after an early breakfast proceed for full day drive to Yuksum, it was here that the first king of Sikkim, H.H Funchok Namgyal was crowned by His holiness Gyalwa Latchen Thembo, the man who introduced Buddhism in Sikkim in 1641 A.D. The stone throne used by this first King still exists at Yuksum. at Dubde. Two kms from Yuksum, stands the oldest monastery in Sikkim. This was the residence of Gyalwa Latchen Thembo. Barley and oranges are the main produce of the area.
Day 4 : Yuksum - Tsokha (3500 Mts) : 7 hrs
14 Kms from Yuksum Tsokha is situated at an altitude of 3500 m. A tough climb through dense vegetation and across two clear mountain streams and the meadow of Bakhim (3005mts) brings us to our camp at the tiny interesting Tibetan village of Tsokha. In the forest along the trail grow several varieties of flowers like magnolia, rhododendron, blue poppies and orchids. Wildlife in the area includes black and brown Himalayan bear, barking deer, Sambhar, and antelopes.
Day 5 : Tsokha - Dzongri (4030 Mts) : 6 hrs
At an altitude of 4030m, Dzongri lies 6 kms from Tsokha. A steep ascent through dense forest, and past Phedang mid point of this days trek from where one can have spectacular views of Mt. Pandim, brings us to the top of a ridge into rhododendron country. Magnificent view of Kanchenjunga and its satellite peaks in all their glory.
Day 6 : Dzongri - Dzongri La (4415 Mts) - Dzongri 2 hrs
Early morning climb unto Dzongri La (4415 Mts) to have Views of Kanchenzunga massif, Kabru dome, Gocha, Jopunu and Pandim. Rest of day at leisure.
Day 7 : Dzongri - Thangsing (3840 Mts) : 5 hrs
A 5 hr walk to Thangsing (3930m) brings us to the base of the Jopunu peak. cross an interesting wooden bridge en route at Krogchu, and little mountain streams gurgling through the forest, lend a quaint charm to the area.
Day 8 : Thangsing - Samiti Lake (4200 Mts) : 4 hrs
7 kms of mainly level trekking to Samiti Lake (4200m.), at the base of Mt. Pandim. The initial phase of the 3 hr trek is relatively easy. The climb begins on the final approach of Samiti lake Vegetation in the area includes cryptomaria japonica bushes, the dried leaves of which are used by Buddhists as an incence. Marble cats, blue sheep, Tibetan antelope, red panda and musk deer are often sighted.
Day 9 : Samiti Lake - Gocha la (4940 Mts) - Krogchu (3800 Mts) : 12 hrs
A day long round trip to the Gocha la (4940m) and back provides spectacular views of the Kanchenjunga massif as well as mountains in Nepal and Tibet.
Day 10 : Krogchu - Tsohka : 7 hrs
Return Trek.
Day 11 : Tsohka - Yuksum : 6 hrs

Day 12 : Yuksum - Gangtok (1500 mts)
Drive to Gangtok. Overnight hotel. Perched on top of a ridge at a height of 1520 Mts. lies Gangtok, a quaint, colorful town. This small modernized town is the capital of Sikkim. Here we visit the famous monastery of Rumtek which is the head quarters of the Kagyu sect. Later, we visit the Institute of Tibetology which has a collection of almost 30,000 volumes on diverse subjects like astrology, philosophy, magic and religion. After lunch we visit the Orchid Sanctuary which has over 200 species of temperate and intermediate orchids on beautifully landscaped grounds. Our next stop is the Epica gardens which has a large collection of indigenous plants of Sikkim.
Day 13 : Gangtok - Bagdogra - Calcutta /Delhi
Drive to Bagdogra and transfer to airport to board flight for Calcutta or Delhi. Met upon arrival and assisted in connecting international flight..
