Singalila ridge trek is one of the most admired as well as fascinating treks in India. this trek offers breath-taking views of the Himalayan range from Darjeeling hills where tea plantations stretch as far as the eye can see, to Sikkim. On this breathtaking Singalila ridge Trek you will see Buddhist Monasteries, hillsides covered with wildflowers, forests of thick oak, bamboo, magnolia and rhododendrons until you reach Sandakphu, at 3636m the highest point in West Bengal. From here you can see four of the five highest peaks in the world – Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse and Makalu. An unforgettable trekking experience.
During Singalila ridge trek as you descend the temperatures become noticeably warmer again, and the landscapes more rural in aspect. Along the way you pass through cheerful villages of varying ethnicity; Tamang, rai and Sherpa. Crossing the Siri Khola River you’ll eventually reach the road head village of Rimbik were our trek ends.
Day 1 : Darjeeling - Tumling (3070mt/10072ft) 5/6Hrs
Our trek starts with a 30 kms Drive till Maneybhanjyang, A small town Situated in Middle of Rimbik and Darjeeling. Our trek starts From Maneybhanjyang with gradual steep trial covered with Rhododendrons till Half Way. A hour Trek and we reach border of Nepal and India and Following Jeep Road We Reach Tumling. Overnight in Tumling.
Day 2 : Tumling - Kalapokhari (3186 mt / 10453ft) 4/5hrs
Rise early today for sunrise view. After breakfast descend towards Tumling, a Gurung village and then ascent for about two kilometers towards the viewpoint. After spending some time here, head on the trail that drops to Gairibas, 2,800 m., your lunch spot. There is a forest bungalow in this village. After lunch the trail ascends all the way through dwarf rhododendron forest to Kala pokhari, meaning black lake. This route is also rich in Primulae species, Inpatients falcifer, Owl-eyed Impatiens, Sorbus, Pyrus, Enkaithus and Roscoea alpina. Your camp will be set beside the dark crystaline waters of Kalo Pokhari lake shimmering in the breeze and surrounded by alpine trees with the mountains looming across the horizon.
Day 3 : Kalapokhari - Sandakphu (3636mt / 11929ft) 3/4hrs
Today’s trail ascends to Sandhakphu through magnolia, blue pine and rhododendron forest. Sandhakphu is the highest point in this trek and the reward for all the trudging culminates in a magnificent panorama of the eastern Himalayas of Nepal and Sikkim, from Everest in the east all the way to to Jhomolhari in Bhutan. After lunch we take an excursion around Sandhakphu, which is a veritable botanists’ paradise. Apart from the different varieties of rhododendrons, plants like Streptous simplex, Trilidium govanianum, Primula rotundifolia, Fritillaria cirrhosa, Llydia and other flora like Anemone and Iris can be found here.
Day 4 : Sandakphu – Phalut (3500mt/11482ft) 5/6hrs
An easy day’s walk along the ridge through the forest of rhododendron, magnolia, chestnut, oak and silver fir to your lunch spot at Sabargram, 3536 m. All along, the imposing Himalayas loom large on the western horizon. After lunch, it is a short flat walk on the trail barring a gradual ascent finally before arriving at Phalut, a tri-junction point between Nepal, Sikkim and the Darjeeling District. Other than the different varieties of rhododendrons, you will also come across varieties of Meconopsis, Primulae, Orchids, Parnassia etc.
Day 5 : Phalut – Rammam(2560mt/8398ft) 4/5hrs
The trail goes all the way down through dense rhododendron forests and bamboo groves towards the village of Gorkhey. After lunch at Gorkhey, a short ascent will lead you to a picturesque village inhabited by Sherpa’s, Samanden, better known as the lost valley. Standing at a plateau in the middle of a dense forest this village is noted for its fertile land. The trail then leads to Rammam, a small village inhabited by Sherpa’s and Tamangs. From here there is a good view of Sikkim’s western hills.
Day 6 : Rammam – Rimbick – Darjeeling
A downhill trail takes us to the floor of the Sri Khola valley before climbing through thick forests of the Singalila National Park to the road head of Rimbick. A fascinating day as it offers another opportunity to experience a walk through untouched parts of the eastern Himalayas followed by a section through a couple of orderly hillside villages allowing us to see the local lifestyle from close hand.
