Jo'burg was discovered on a reef of gold in 1886, and has since become the largest city in South Africa. Visit the city and see how the decentralisation of business to Sandton has affected the old CBD, and the reasons why it happened. See Nelson Mandela's house, historic buildings, the old Stock Exchange, an outdoor African Medicine Market and more.
From the city we drive south to the Apartheid Museum. The museum gives one a great idea of life in the townships and in the old South Africa, and is an excellent introduction before heading into Soweto for the rest of your tour. The Apartheid Museum contains a huge amount of information, interviews, real life events and protests that occurred, and one needs at least 2 hours to be able to cover everything.
After the museum we drive towards Africa's largest township, Soweto, made famous during the apartheid era. The South Western Township with a population of ± 1.5 million people tells the story of a peoples struggle for freedom and the hardships they endured. Visit a Shanty Town, Freedom Square, Nelson & Winnie Mandela's house, Hector PietersonMemorial as well as the upper class suburbs of Soweto. Lunch can be enjoyed at one of the restaurants in Soweto, while reflecting on South Africa's 'Long Walk to Freedom'.
