Your tour begins with a drive to Pachacamac, located about 19 miles to the south of Lima. During pre-Inca and Inca times, it was the most important ceremonial center of the Peruvian Coast. Constructed around 700 A.D., early inhabitants came here to worship and give offerings to their God, “Pachacamac,” who was believed to be the creator of the world and its creatures.
The city, which is four square miles, is divided into two parts: the sacred and temporal.
The Temple to the God of Creation was once the largest structure, and contained altars for sacrificial ceremonies. Traces remain of vivid frescoes that decorated the interior, and evidence shows that doors were elaborately inlaid with turquoise, coral, and rock crystal.
Situated in an extremely arid climate, the adobe buildings remained in astonishingly good condition until a freak storm in the 1920s caused massive erosion. Still impressive, these ruins evoke vivid images of the people and culture that once inhabited them
