Day 1 : Hanoi - Ba Be Lake
In the morning you will set off for Ba Be National Park from our office at 83 Ma May Street, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi. Ba Be Lake is a Natural World Heritage Site, featuring a stunning freshwater lake surrounded by sweeping limestone mountains covered in evergreen forest. During your journey, you will stop for refreshment in Thai Nguyen where you will have the chance to visit the museum of the cultures of Vietnam's ethnic group to understand more about the ethnic minority groups in northern Vietnam. After this, you will continue to Bac Kan for lunch and onwards to Ba Be National Park. Here you will have time to relax or take in the scenery by walking around the lake shore to see the Tay villages surrounded by thick jungles and towering karsts. You will stay overnight in a Tay house (Mr Linh's Homestay).
Day 2 : Ba Be Lake - Cao Bang
This morning you will take a boat ride through the entire length of the three connected lakes (Ba Be translates as Three Bays) giving you the chance to enjoy the scenery from a different angle and an opportunity to see some of the wildlife living in the park. The boat will then go upriver to the small village of Hua Tang. A short walk (20 m) through the jungle will take you to the scenic Dau Dang Waterfalls where you can admire the cascades and soak up the tranquil ambience. You will then travel up the Nang River to the astonishing Dong Puong Cave. This enormous tunnel (300m long by 30m high) through the limestone mountain has been carved out over hundreds of years by the flow of the river. After lunch in Cho Ra Town, you will drive towards Cao Bang. Here there are many different ethnic minority communities such as H’Mong, Dzao, Tho and Nung. You will arrive in Cao Bang Town at about 17:00 where you will check-in to your hotel. In the evening you are free to explore the town. You will stay overnight in a hotel in Cao Bang.
Day 3 : Cao Bang - Ban Gioc - Bao Lac
After breakfast in your hotel, you will drive to Ban Gioc Waterfall, where you can spend some time taking in the dramatic waterfall which separates Vietnam from neighbouring China. This picturesque, cascading waterfall is 53 meters high and has an impressive span of 300 meters. The drive there also offers unique landscapes with limestone karst formation which soar from the verdant rice paddies of the surrounding farms of local communities. Along the way, you will see Tay, Hmong and Dzao ethnic minority groups, tending their crops and livestock and completing the tasks of daily life in these rural communities. After having time to soak up the beauty of the falls you will go for lunch in a restaurant near to the falls. On the journey back to Cao Bang, you will also visit the 2,144-meter long Nguom Ngao Cave to discover its brilliant stalactites. After you return to Cao Bang, you will drive to Bao Lac town where you will stay for the night in the Song Gam River Hotel.
Day 4 : Bao Lac - Meo Vac - Dong Van
After breakfast, you will leave Bao Lac Village and head to the stunningly beautiful district of Dong Van which is punctuated by a wide range of rock formations and home to a number of ethnic minority groups. Here you will have the chance to see and even visit traditional houses. The scenic route climbs over a mountain pass and then descends down to Meo Vac Valley, a beautiful valley which sits near to the Chinese border. After having lunch at a local restaurant, you will have the opportunity to trek along the Ma Pi Leng Pass which clings to edge of the mountains and offers unrivalled views the mountain ranges and the Nho Que River. As the roads zigzag along to Dong Van, you will notice just not only how remote and unchanged life is here but also how difficult daily life must be. You will stay overnight in a hotel in Dong Van where you will have the chance to wander the ancient streets lined with old houses of the H’mong people made of clay bricks and tiled roofs.
Day 5 : Dong Van - Yen Minh - Quan Ba - Ha Giang
Before you leave Dong Van, you can discover some of the towns history with a visit to the Dong Van Old Quarter, and if your trip falls on a Sunday, Dong Van Market. Before you leave, you can climb to the historical French Fortress of Pu Lo, a relic of the French colonial era which also acts a fantastic viewpoint for mountains and valleys in the distance. You can then enjoy a leisurely drive from Dong Van to Yen Minh & Quan Ba taking in the sweeping vistas on the way. You will then visit Vuong Palace, a grand house cloaked by a thick forest which a high ranking H'mong family. Each part of the palace was very carefully designed and it was infamous for its storage of weapons and opium. After time exploring the palace and grounds, you will then hit the road back to Quan Ba and then Ha Giang for the night where you will stay in Tay ethnic village.
