‘Sandakphu’ referring to as the land of poisonous plant is located at the altitude of 11929fts/3636mts in the district of Darjeeling in the north-western direction alongside the border of Nepal. This area is also accompanied by the Singalila range and the national park there. The main reason for trekkers to visiting this place at least once in their lifetime from all around the globe is, the hill offering you the view of four out of five highest peaks in the world i.e. Mt. Everest, Kanchenjunga, Makalu and Lhotse stretching the Himalayan range with other peaks of Nepal, Sikkim, Tibet & Bhutan.
Sandakphu is further complimented with the varieties of flora and fauna. During the spring season which is very suitable and advisable for the commencement for trek, one can see the hill fully covered by different types of rhododendron, magnolia flowers and the orchids which in fact might reach to 600 different types. When one is passing through these hills a mild fragrance of these beautiful flowers will accompany along.
As Singalila National Park lies along the way of your trek rout therefore you can fortunately see the rare animals featuring red panda, pangolin and many species of birds.
The gateway to Sandakphu trek initiates from small town of Maneybhanjyang (7054fts) situated at the Indo-Nepal border. It is 26 kms away from Darjeeling, which can be covered by vehicles within 1 – 11/2 hrs.
Day 1 : Maneybhanjyang
Start early from Maneybhanjyang through a steep climb to reach Tanglu (3070mts, 9 kms, 5 to 6 hrs), on the way there is a small inhabitat of few families at Meghma about 7kms away from Maneybhanjyang.This place has a tea house, an accommodation to offer if necessary. It also houses a small monastery and a chorten (stupa). Further 2 kms walk leads to day 1 destination (Tanglu-3070fts). On a clear day Tanglu also named as Tumling by the locals offers a magnificent sight of Nepal’s valley, North Bengal and the rivers Teesta and Koshi. Overnight stay at the lodge or home-stay offering basic facilities and homely dinner.
Day 2 : Sandakphu
After early breakfast start your hike to Sandakphu (3636mts, 20kms, 6 to 7 hrs), after covering 9 kms of downhill walk for about 2 hrs you will reach the village of Gairibas (2321mts) where one can take a tea break. Further walk from Gairibas to Kalipokhri covering a distance of 6 kms for about 3 hrs, take rest of sometime. Kalipokhri has a small pond which is renamed after black pond, this pond’s water is black and it never freezes during the cold winter times. Further hike from Kalipokhri to Bikhaybhanjyang is the valley of poison (Aconites grow in abundance at this place).It is a very steep climb of 4 kms from Bikhaybhanjyang to Sandakphu which might take another hour or two to reach. Overnight at the lodge or home-stay.
Day 3 : Phalut
Wake up early morning to view the sun-rise reflected at the mountain peaks around is a breath taking sight you don’t want to miss. One can view probably the whole Singalila range, Nepal’s valley and the mountain range from here.
After breakfast start for Phalut (3600mts, 21kms, 6 to 7 hrs ). The most spectacular and awaited moment in the whole trek is this part, when one is covering the walk from Sandakphu to Phalut. The whole valley consist of bare treeless slopes and burnet silver forest and hence, while your walk you will be companied by the Everest in the left and Kanchenjunga right ahead which is the most amazing view one can ever see. After reaching Phalut stay for overnight at the guest house.
Day 4 : Singalila
Just 20 mins walk towards the hill’s summit, one can see the gigantic view of the snowy range also the trijunction of Sikkim, Nepal and Darjeeling. The view of Kanchenjunga from this spot is magnificently huge compared to the one seen from Sandakphu and also notice, this Singalila range sticking out from Kanchenjunga.
After breakfast start for further journey towards Gorkhey Khola (15 kms, 4to 5 hrs), making your way through virgin forest of chestnut, pine, hemlock, bamboo etc. After reaching Gorkhey trekkers can take a refreshing bath at this river and followed by the lunch. Afternoon start your walk to Rammam about 8kms which might take 2 to 3 hours. Overnight stay at Rammam.
Day 5 : Departure
After early breakfast commence towards Rimbik (6500fts, 19kms), after walking 12 kms check point of Sirkhola is reached, trekkers can rest for a while and have their lunch. After that 1 kms of road is steep or upwards path and again the road straightens up for the next remaining 6 kms. On reaching Rimbik (small town) the tour ends hence, one take an onward connection towards Darjeeling or can stay for overnight in Rimbik and catch a transport next day.
