Individual arrival in SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO, a large town to the west of the Gargano (and the Gargano peninsula and national park) that is especially well known for its important religious monuments. Overnight stay in San Giovanni Rotondo.
Day 2 :
Bike and road map delivery and route description. Leaving San Giovanni Rotondo, you willl cycle through the beautiful GARGANO NATIONAL PARK and along Varano's Lake, the largest coastal lake in Italy, until you will reach RODI GARGANICO that stands on a small promontory overlooking the sea and still preserves some towers and archeological treasure that tell the ancient history of the Greek and Roman colony. (About 65 Km) Overnight stay in Rodi Garganico.
Day 3 :
Today you are free to reach TREMITI ISLAND by seasonal ferry service, a Marine Nature Reserve since 1989. Alternatively you can stay in Rodi Garganico and enjoy the clear waters and long sandy beaches, the ruins of its ancient port and the castle, the bell towers of some churches, like St. Peter, St. Nicholas and the Crucifix. Not to be missed is certainly a walk in the picturesque district of "Vuccolo". Overnight stay in Rodi Garganico.
Day 4 :
Today you can choose two different paths: you can have a more relaxing cycling day riding along the beautiful coast of Adriatic sea up to PESCHICI (about 20 Km). Or, for the more energetic, you can enjoy some climbs, cycling from Rodi Garganico to Umbra Forest, a protected area within the Gargano National Park, that extends up to an altitude of 830 meters and descends into large beech woods 270 meters below the level of the sea. Here you can see 47 different species of orchids and many wild animals: deer, wild cats, and different types of birds such as peregrine falcons and buzzards. Anyway the breathtaking view over the Tremiti Islands once you reach the top is worth the climb (about 60 Km). Overnight stay in Peschici.
Day 5 :
This stage is dedicated to the coast of Gargano. Enjoy yourself visiting some of the wonderful sea caves that characterize this area, (about 30 Km). Overnight stay in VIESTE.
Day 6 :
The Gargano won't stop to amaze you. Another wonderful cycling day is waiting for you. Today you will be fascinated with Gargano promontory. The coast surrounding this expansive promontory seems permanently bathed in a pink-hued, pearly light, providing a painterly contrast to the sea, which softens from intense to powder blue as the evening draws in. Destination of the day: MATTINATA, (about 50 Km). Overnight stay in Mattinata.
Day 7 :
Today is the hardest day of the tour. You need to climb by bike towards MONTE SANT'ANGELO, the oldest town in Gargano. Here, in one of the many caves scattered in the limestone of the Gargano promontory is the Altar of San Michele Arcangelo eventually incorporated into the homonymous Basilica, still a place of pilgrimage as it was in ancient times. Your bike tour ends in SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO, (about 60 Km).Overnight stay in San Giovanni Rotondo.
