Day 1 : Airport - Colombo
Arrive in Colombo and spend the rest of the day in Colombo. Colombo (derived from Sinhalese name Kola-amba-thota which means "mango harbour", altered by the Portuguese to honour Christopher Columbus), is the cultural capital and largest city and commercial center of Sri Lanka. (The new administrative capital of Sri Lanka is Sri Jayawardenepura-Kotte.)
Day 2 : Colombo - Nuwara Eliya
After breakfast leave to Nuwara Eliya, also known as the "City of Lights" and "Little England". En route, visit a tea factory to watch how tea making is done. Nuwara Eliya was the favourite hill station of the British who tried to create Nuwara Eliya into a typical English Village. The old brick Post office, country house like hill club, with it's hunting pictures, mounted hunting trophies and fish, and it's strict formal dinner attire; the 18 hole golf course, race course etc., all remind you of 'England'. Blessed with salubrious climate, breathtaking views of valleys, meadows, mountains and greenery surrounding Lake Gregory; it's hard to imagine that Nuwara Eliya is only 180 Km from the hot and humid Colombo. The areas around Nuwara Eliya also provide the main output of tea in Sri Lanka. A trip to the highlands of Sri Lanka is never complete without witnessing the age-old traditional tea plucking and sipping a cup of "Ceylon Tea". Visitors to Nuwara Eliya can also taste the freshly plucked strawberries and purchase fresh fruits and vegetables. Therefore enjoy the afternoon witnessing these sights
Day 3 :
Kandy, is a city in the centre of Sri Lanka. It lies in the midst of hills of rare vegetal species. The Kandy Valley crosses an area of tropical plantations. The monumental ensemble of Kandy is an example of construction that associates the Royal Palace and the Temple of the Tooth. Kandy has now grown out to encompass Peradeniya, home to the Botanical Gardens. Kandy is also particularly famed for the great Kandy Esala Perahara (a Pageant of Elephants and Dancers in the night), which is over ten days in the month of Esala (15th – 25th August) having many attractions to justify.
Day 4 : Kandy - Pinnawala - Dambulla
After breakfast, leave to Dambulla, en route visiting the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage, established in 1975, commenced with seven orphans. The orphanage is home to hundreds of abandoned or injured elephants who are looked after with warmth, love and affection. The elephants at the orphanage are bathed daily in a river located nearby. The original objective of establishing the orphanage was more towards promoting tourism, but soon became a conservation and educational centre. With the help of local and foreign elephant experts, Pinnawela started a scientific captive-breeding programme for elephants.
Visit Dambulla Cave Temples in the afternoon. The beautiful Dambulla Cave Temples is a UNESCO world heritage. It is the largest cave monastery in the country with a history going back to the 1st century BC. They are laid out as a maze of caves, of which a handful is well worth a sighting
Day 5 : Dambulla - Sigirya - Dambulla
After a lazy breakfast, you will be visiting the Sigiriya rock fortress – a UNESCO world heritage site. The Sigiriya rock was built in the 5th Century during the reign of King Kasyapa (477-495 AD). Sigiriya is commonly called the 'Fortress in the Sky' and is probably the most fantastic wonder of Sri Lanka. It is also known as Lion Rock because of the huge lion that used to stand at the entrance to the Palace on the summit of the 600-foot rock.
Return to the hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure. Or explore a Sri Lankan craft village
Day 6 : Dambulla - Polonnaruwa - Minneriya - Dambulla
After breakfast, drive to Polonnarwa. In Polonnaruwa, hear tales of how the king's court was laid out at the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. Another important royal capital, more recent than Anuradhapura, with its well-preserved 12th century ruins & impressive stone culture recalls an inspired past. Although nearly 1000 years old, the monuments are arranged in a reasonably compact garden setting and their development is easier to follow.
On your way back, visit the Minneriya National park for an elephant safari . Minneriya National Park has an extent of 8,889 hectares and is reputed for its large population of elephants in herds of 100 to 150 roaming in the jungle and seen in the catchments area of the lake. Other wildlife that can be sighted include wild buffaloes, wild boar, spotted deer, sloth bear, sambhur, leopards, crocodiles, jackals, nine species of amphibians, 25 kinds of reptiles, 160 species of birds, 26 varieties of fish and 78 varieties of butterflies.
Day 7 : Dambulla - Trincomalee
Tricomalee has to offer some of the best beaches in Sri Lanka, unspoilt and pristine. Although scarred by close to three decades of conflict, Trincomalee has not lost its allure to its die-hard fans, and its crystal clear waters, wide white sandy beaches and stunning coral reefs make Trincomalee a haven for diving enthusiasts and sun worshippers
Day 8 : Trincomalee
Spend the days at leisure by the beach enjoying all sorts of sea/beach activities
Day 9 : Trincomalee
