"Trekking to the forbidden kingdom of Nepal takes you to the ancient capital of Lopas (People of Lo or Mustang) Upper Mustang which nestles at the rainshadow of majestic Dhaulagiri- Upper Mustang Trek 20 Days"
Mustang, a long lost kingdom, implies the aura of mystery and seclusion. So, this hidden kingdom can be a fascinating to those who crave for wilderness and exploration. The in-habitants of Lomanthang- capital of Mustang would boastfully call them Lopa which refers the people of Lo. The religion practiced at Lo is a Tibetan Buddhism of the Sakyapa sect. In Lo itself the countryside resembles the Tibetan plateaus with endless expanses of yellow and grey rolling hills eroded by wind. Villages are several hours apart and houses are constructed with fewer stones but with more sun baked bricks and mud. Early morning in the first possible flight you will fly to Jomsom. After 30 minutes of thrilling flight you will land at Jomsom and instantly set out on the trekking journey towards northern Kagbeni. Initially the trial cross passes interweaving seies of suspension bridges over Kali Gandaki River. Then the trek takes you through desert resembling the Tibetan ones and surrounded by stunning Dhaulagiri (8167m), Tukuche Peak (6920m), Nilgiri, and Annapurna Ranges. Then path expands as it prolongs to north across the stretches of sand, pebbles and boulders. You will be recurrently passing by mules bringing supplies. More or less after 3 hours of the hike you will reach Kagbeni. It is a beautiful trading village. The residents here are the major links supplying foods and other basic needs from the urban cities to the Mustang region. The view of Mt. Nilgiri is the first mountain which will bump within our sight while arriving to Kagbeni from the south. The day’s trek ends at a tea house in Kagbeni.
Day 5 : Trek to Chele 3050m (6-7) Hours Trek
Today the trek begins with a steep climb through the array of gullies and small towers, crisscrossing to a viewpoint over Kagbeni with Nilgiri. As you reach to Kagbeni check post you will be provided a eye-catching white backdrop of Fluted Peak. The trail continues on the east bank of the Kali Gandaki River, through several ups and downs until you reach the village of Tange. The first phase of today’s trek to Tange is four hours long where you will enjoy the meal. It is a Mongolian village comprising Gurungs, Thakalis and some families from the land of Lo. From Tange the trail again climbs to the elevation of 3100 m. The trail then slides down steeply and rolls along the east bank of Kali Gandaki for one and half hours to the village of Chhuksang. Chele is seeable at a distant from Chhuksang. A short walk along the river bank will bring you to a firm bridge over Kali Gandaki River. Cross passing the bridge you will enter the tunnel which is burrowed under a vast block of red sandstone. Beyond the tunnel the short steep climb will bring you to Chele 3050m.
Day 6 : Trek to Eklo Bhatte 3820m. (6-6.5) Hours Trek
Today once again the Upper Mustang trek begins with gaining elevation sharply. It leads to a plateau through a small trough. Taking a sharp corner, the sight of the village of Ghyakar appears to the west. To the south panorama of Nilgiri, Tilicho peak and Yakawa Kang is awe-inspiringly amazing. Throng La Pass looks even greater. On the far-east the range of the Damodar Danda is seen. Beyond the plateau a short descent will take you to Samar- an old-world settlement in a orchard of willows with superior running water. Three hours walk to Samar might have exhausted you and hence you will take your lunch here. Post lunch at Samar the trail tumbles down sharply for about 70 m into a cavernous side ravine. A short steep climb will take you out of it and after a brief breather it pushes again into another side ravine. Again a steep climb will take you out which this time is steeper and longer. 2 hours of strenuous walk from Samar, will bring you to the altitude of 3750m and descends slightly to the first tea house. The second tea houses can be seen in the distance which is Eklo Bhatte, but once more the trail dives into another steep ravine and it will take another hour to reach it after a short up climb. Finally you will be at Eklo Bhatte. You will camp here for the night.
Day 7 : Trek to Ghami 3520m (6-6.5) hours trek
From the teahouse at Eklo Bhatte the trail climbs gently to a small pass at 3870m with views straight below into deeply windswept gorges. Dwelling in these gorges are monks who reside in the beautiful cave monasteries. About 90 minutes of hike from the camp, is the tea shop of Syangmochen. After a gentle climb the trail levels out to Chorten at 3700m and the first view of the Geling villages below 3500m is seeable. From here the trail plummets gradually into another less stern gully and climbs out to a collection of houses. You will release your tiredness here stopping for the lunch. Geling would be an ideal camping venue, since it is close to the monastery, chorten, and mostly wide pastures. However, post lunch the trail continues around above Geling and starts the long climb to the Nyi pass 3950m. A long descent, out of the wind, takes you down more steeply to Ghami 3520m.
Day 8 : Trek to Tsarang 3500m 6-7 Hours Trek
From the Gompa in Ghami two trial branches into two- a trail along the gully to the east of the village, steeply passes a trio of red, black and white chortens which are widespread sights in upper Mustang. At the bed of the gully are two bridges over the river, there is an express path to this point if you had not visited Ghami. You will follow the trail that climbs onto a gentle sloppy plateau and passes beside a very long wall after about half hour walk from Ghami. From the touch line of the wall the trail heads away from east to a very dramatic red eroded canyon wall soaring above the village of Tramar in the distance. From here you will climb progressively to an elevation of 3770m. From this point the descent to Tsarang is quite gentle and it can be completed in about 2 hours.
Day 9 : Trek to Lomanthang 3700m 5-6 Hours Trek
The trail continues northwest towads the the capital Forbidden Kingdom-Lomanthang once you depart Tsarang. As you are clear of the village the trail plummets steeply into the Tsarang Chu gorge. Then crossing the river beyond the gorge the route climbs along the steep hill. As you take sharp bend and head north a great view of the majestic white Himalayan peaks of Nilgiri, Tilicho and Annapurna I sprawl before you. At your back Brikuti peak shines to the southeast. The trail climbs along the west gentle side of the valley to west to the isolated chorten at 3620 m. It is about 2 hours from Tsarang. An hour hike beyond Tsarang you will be gifted with the views of some spectacular caves high up in the cliffs to the east. You will arrive at a “narrow window” pass at 3850 m. The view ahead extends out to display the western valley of Lo-Manthang. The bright bicolor monastery of Namgyal in a distant is observable with the wide valley surrounding it. Tingkar (the site of the King’s summer palace) and Phewa villages lay behind it. Just down from the pass are the first theatrical view of the walled city of Lo-Manthang and the ancient ruins of the forts on the hills behind it. There is a marvelous view to the east of the multi-colored Mustang Khola canyon, to the north lies the flattish, red-colored hills and the Tibetan border. The western view is dominated by the snow-capped peak of ‘Manaslu‘. The descent to Lo-Manthang is short and after crossing the small river and climbing briefly the fabled city is finally reached.
