Day wise Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Cusco / Calca-Lares/ Wacawasi

We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco in the morning for the drive by private vehicle to the trailhead. We will leave Cusco at 6.00 am and head for Calca, a small town in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. At this time of the morning this is a spectacular route. Along the way we will visit the Inca colcas (granaries) of Muyoq Orqo, before continuing past the peak known as Sawasiray on our way to Willka Punku Pass, which marks the start of the ascent to Lares. There will be time to rest and enjoy the thermal baths of Lares, and after lunch we will begin our trek by walking to our first campsite near the village of Wacawasi, where we will visit local weavers and have our evening meal. Camp

Driving distance: Cusco – Lares 92 kilometers / 57.16 miles (paved road – 3 hours)

After breakfast we will continue our trek in the direction of Ipsayqocha Pass, a steady climb through the natural habitat of llamas and alpacas. Here, as we appreciate the panoramic views, it is possible to observe a number of high Andean bird species.

At 4420 meters (14,500 feet), Ipsaycocha is the only high pass on our route. Here the landscape is dotted with herds of llamas and alpacas. Once over the pass, a long descent will take us to the indigenous community of Patacancha, where we will make camp.

  • Day 3 : Patacancha – Ollantaytambo - Aguas Calientes

This morning we will hike to the community of Willoq, a traditional farming, llama herding and weaving community that has conserved its traditional way of life. The trail follows a narrow valley through Inca terraces still used by local communities to grow potatoes, corn, quinoa, lupines and many other native crops. In the village our vehicle will be waiting to take us to the Inca village of Ollantaytambo, where we will have time to explore the imposing Inca ruins before continuing our trip by road.

    Visit to Pumamarca

Pumamarca was an important administrative and agricultural center. It is located in the Patacancha valley and is accessed via a 40-minute walk uphill from the road. This is not a difficult walk and the scenery is very beautiful, with fine views of the surrounding valley. The site itself is surrounded by a zigzagging wall, suggesting that it was once a fortress. The citadel possesses a large number of colcas, or storehouses, and more than one hundred terraces stretch out across the valley.

After visiting the ruins we will continue by road to Ollantaytambo (40 minutes).

Visit to the Inca village of Ollantaytambo (1 hour)

(The visit to Ollantaytambo ruins is optional and entrance fees are not included)

The village of Ollantaytambo retains the original street plan of the Inca settlement, making it the only surviving example of Inca urban planning. During the Inca period, Ollantaytambo was the royal estate of the emperor Pachacutec, the sovereign who initiated the process of Inca imperial expansion. During the Spanish conquest of Peru Ollantaytambo served as a stronghold for Manco Inca, the leader of Inca resistance to colonial rule. Our tour will include a visit to the agricultural areas around the village, the irrigation system and the village itself. In the late afternoon we will board a train to the small town of Aguas Calientes (hotel not included).

    Trekking distance: Patacancha – Willoq 3.90 kilometers / 2.42 miles (2 hours)

Pallata – Pumamarca 2 kilometers / 1.24miles (4 hours, including time to explore the site)

    Altitudes: Willoq 4420 meters / 14,497 feet; Pallata 3179 meters / 10,427 feet; Pumamarca 3435 meters / 11,266 feet; Ollantaytambo train station 2800 meters / 9184 feet

Distance by road: Willoq to Ollantaytambo 24 kilometers / 15 miles (1hour)

Train: Ollantaytambo – Machu Picchu 55 kilometers by train (2 hours)

    • Meals & Drinks : Breakfast, lunch, dinner
  • Day 4 : Full Day at Machu Picchu

Tourists who come by train directly from Cusco arrive at the ruins from around 10 am onwards, and to avoid these crowds we will take the first bus up to the ruins at 6:30 am, giving us plenty of time to enjoy the “Lost City of the Incas”. If weather conditions and the physical condition of the participants allow, and if there are spaces available, we can also make the optional walk to the summit of Huayna Picchu.

Our guided tour will include the temples, plazas, palaces, watercourses and residential areas of the site, after which there will be plenty of time to explore the ruins independently and take pictures. In the afternoon we will return by bus to Aguas Calientes to catch the train back to Cusco.

Tour length: 3 hours at Machu Picchu.

Optional ascent of Huayna Picchu: Subject to availability (2-3 hours).

    Altitudes: Machu Picchu 2460 meters / 8068 feet; Huayna Picchu 2720 meters / 8922 feet; Aguas Calientes 2020 meters / 6625 feet
