The term Kalimantan refers to the Indonesian portion of the island of Borneo, the 3rd largest island in the world.The non-Indonesian parts of Borneo are of Brunei and East Malaysia.
More than 15 million people live in Kalimantan.
The word Kalimantan was derived from Sanskrit Kalamanthana which means ‘ burning weather island’ or island with a very hot temperature to describe its hot and humid tropical climate.
Skewered by the equator and roasting under a tropical sun the steamy forests of Kalimantan serve up endless opportunities for epic rainforest exploration.
The Borneo rainforest is 130 million years old making it one of the oldest rainforests in the world and 70 million years older than the Amazon rainforest.
The noble orangutan shares the canopy with acrobatic gibbons while prehistoric hornbills patrol air above.
The local people collectively known as Dayak, have long lived with this rich challenging landscape, they also are well-known for their hospitality.
Day 1 : Airport - Kumai - National Park - Houseboat
Arriving at the airport, you will be picked up then transfer to Kumai harbor, cross the Sekonyer River for about 15 minutes by boat called klothok. It is the beginning of your trip to Tanjung Puting National Park. Along the way upstream, you will see the different trees vegetation. Stop at first station (Tanjung harapan) to see orangutan feeding at 3 p.m. In addition, in the afternoon, it is the right time to see proboscis monkeys (long nose monkeys), macaques, and kind of birds. And in the evening You can see colonies of fire fly. Stay overnight on the boat.
Day 2 : Houseboat - National Park - Houseboat
After morning breakfast on the boat, you will visit Camp Leakey. Along the way, you can see proboscis monkeys (long nose monkeys), macaques, fishes, crocodiles, and kind of birds. Arriving at Camp Leakey, trekking to heterogenic forest . Camp Leakey is a place used by Orangutan Foundation International (OFI) to have research. After trekking, stop at information centre, still in the Camp Leakey area. Afternoon, back to Camp Leakey for orangutan feeding at 2 p.m. After that back to the boat to take shower. boating down for about 2km, for overnight.
Day 3 : Houseboat - National Park - Houseboat
After morning breakfast on the boat, down to Pondok Tanggui to see orangutan feeding at 9 a.m. After that , back to the boat, boating down to Pesalat, reforestation project. There are many kinds of traditional medicine plantation and seedling. you can adopt the seed to be planted in this place. Then go back to the boat to have lunch and take a rest. After lunch continue your trip to village. witnessing local people activities. then, witnessing orangutan feeding for the second time in Tanjung Harapan at 3 p.m. Back to the boat, boating down to Nipah area, stop to have candle light dinner and stay overnight.
Day 4 : Houseboat - Kumai - Airport
After morning breakfast on the boat, before back to Kumai, visit seikonyer village(depending on the flight time) to walk around. After that, continue to Kumai. Arriving in Kumai, transfer to the airport for your next destination.
