Package Overview

Let us give you a snap-shot of the delights that lie just West of Auckland city beginning with a scenic ascent through our own sub-tropical rainforest, the Waitakere Ranges to the Arataki Visitor Centre. We return via the West Auckland wine region en-route to the black sand beach of Muriwai and the dramatic scene of the annual migratory colony of Gannets which visit each Summer.

SCENIC DRIVE LEAVING AUCKLAND
As we depart Auckland city, we’ll give you a glimpse of a few of the scenic highlights as we ascend into the clouds of Scenic Drive heading towards Auckland’s wild west coast. As the name suggests, this winding, often narrow road which traverses the subtropical rainforest called the Waitakere Ranges is wrapped in a lush green blanket of ferns and trees including several young kauri stands.

ARATAKI VISITOR CENTRE
The prestigious Arataki visitor centre nestled amid the stunning native forest landscape is our first port of call. Here the cultural, natural and colonial history and features of the Waitakere region is detailed in an array of media.

WEST AUCKLAND WINE REGION
Scenic Drive traverses the Waitakere Ranges descending to the West Auckland wine region which was originally established by the Yugoslavian immigrants of this region in the early-mid 1900s. Many of the vineyards today are still owned and operated by their descendants, and we have the opportunity to sample some of the excellent results of these generations of wine making expertise.

MURIWAI BEACH
From the vineyards we head to the rugged black sand beach of Muriwai. We have a rare opportunity to take an easy 10 minute walk to view the gannet colony between the months of August and March (often longer). We encourage you to take a barefoot walk on Muriwai Beach before we return you to your drop off point in central Auckland City.
