The meaning of Zansakar is the white copper (Zans=copper, Kar=white). White copper used to be seen around Zanskar river,that is how the name Zanskar came from.It is located to the south of leh at the elevation of 3600 meters above the sea level, and it is completely isolated and very remote region from the rest of the world. The pre-historic sculptures (Gyawa-Reegna), the five Deyane Buddha, in Zanskar near headquarter padum to the bank of river Tserap, suggest that the people has inhabited in Zanskar since long time ago. Guru padma Sambhawa visited Zanskar in the eight century A.D and prevailed Buddhism around Himalaya. He founded Nanam Guru Chortan at Pibiting. In his extraordinary cave (Zongbawo) i.e. (Holy- cave) where he meditated, you can see his handprint on the roof of cave and enjoy the holy water coming from the bowl of rock. Kanika Stupa at Sani village is an important Stupa which was built during the period of King Kaniska rule and is one of the important crematory places. The Shakya clan dynasty 14thcentury A.D was the first kingdom in Zanskar. The Shakya clan of Nemagon was from the royal family of Guge in western Tibet. 600 hundred years ago Muslim people from Kashmir came to Zanskar for trades and later some of them settled there.

Day wise Itinerary

• Day 1 : Visit Basgo castle, Likir and Alchi monasteries.

  Driving toward the west of Ladakh or Lower Ladakh which is famous for apricot and vegetables as well. Basgo castle is one among the very important heritage monument in the world which is situated on fragile soft soil and was built during the reign of King Jamayang Namgail and Sengay Namgail in 16th century. Likir monastery was built in the 14th century during the reign of fifth King Lhachan Gyalpo offered the land to Lama Duwang Chosjay he was a great mediator and in the 15th century Lawang Lodoz introduced Gylukpa order under the head of great Lama Tsongkhapa.Likir monastery is located in middle of gorge valley on hillock with beautiful mountain.
  
  Alchi is a small temple though it is the only one all around Ladakh the oldest Buddhist temple which is founded in 11th century by a very prominent translator Lotsava Rinchen Zangpo and the temple is totally different than the rest of other monastery in comparison to its wall painting and the architecture is stunning. Night at Lamayuru in the hotel.

• Day 2 : Visit Lamayuru

  visit Lamayuru which is situated next to the high way between Leh and Kargil. In 10thcentury to 11thcentury a eminent Buddhist scholar Naropa retreated at this place. In the 14th century Arhat Nimagon on his way to Ladakh he halt for water nectar and he prophesied later here would arise monastery. Before the whole site was lake after the water nectar the lake starts to drain and established monastery. Crossing two pass 4000mtrs heights and visit Mulbeck Chamba future Buddha.Night at Mulback in the hotel /G.h/camp.

• Day 3 : Rangdum

  Rangdum long driving passing through the kargil district and heading against the Suru river a beautiful villages lush green and passes close to the twin massif glacier Nun and kun 7200,7150 mtrs in hieght. Overnight in the fixed tented camp/Local house.

• Day 4 : Cross Penze-La

  Cross Penze - La leaving towards Zanskar see the magnificent greater Himalaya range and crossing the Penzela pass 4000mtrs and on the roadside will find summer huts who came only for the summer with their animals for grassing for 3 months. And on way also passes many Buddhists villages till to padum the center of Zanskar. Overnight in the Hotel/G.h/Local.h.

  Visit monasteries, karsha, Karsha Nunnery, DorjayZong and Nawaphal
