Vredefort Dome of Vredefort, South Africa is the largest and oldest site of a meteorite hit in the world. The dome was formed some 2000 years ago due to the hit of a large meteorite. The crater which opened up due to the impact measures around 40 km in diameter. The original crater was in fact a much larger affair and measured at 250-300 km. The impact caused cracks to appear in the rocks and molten rocks moved up them. The nature of the rocks thus is clearly different from the rest of the geography. The impact also resulted in the creation of beautiful valleys. The Vredefort Dome has witnessed many tourist activities like river tubing, rafting, horse riding, archery, and mountain biking.
