The discovery of tools which are around 250,000 years old makes the reserve a site which has been inhabited from a very early time. The history of the area has very significant events like iron smelting, gold mining, etc. It was also the seat of power for a host of rulers, including Shaka, Zulu kings, etc. The wide range of game species like giraffe, zebra, buffalo, rhino, elephant, and mountain reedbuck live and roam about in a relaxed manner due to the absence of any lions.
