Located in Abu Dhabi, The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center is an iconic landmark, courtesy its multi-dome structure and triple domed roof. The structure is the third largest mosque in the entire world. It is a key worshiping place in United Arab Emirates and a popular tourist destination.
The mosque was initiated by His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the late president of UAE, with the aim to construct a structure that united cultural diversity and values of historical and modern architecture and art of the Islamic world.
The construction of The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center was carried out from 1996 to 2007. The structure is spread over 12 hectares (30 acres), excluding the parking area and exterior landscaping. The mosque is the largest in the country and a key place for Eid prayers and Friday gatherings. During the festival of Eid, more than 40,000 people visit the place.
A strict code of conduct is followed by the people visiting the mosque. Tour operators are instructed to inform the tourists about it beforehand. Headscarves are important for women and they are required to wear a traditional robe (Abaya). Children are asked to be kept under the supervision of parents at all times.
