It all started with Sheikh Mohammed’s dream to create an iconic building that was to be the reflection of the glorious Arab heritage. The result is of course the Burj Al Arab, the icon of Dubai. The iconic hotel resembles a yacht in water and is built on an island approx. 280 meters off the Jumeirah coast. This man-made wonder took about five years to get completed (1994-99).
The Man Made Island
Burj al Arab is built on a man-made island on the offshore and is connected to the mainland by a walkway. Having a solid foundation comprising of large rocks, hollow concrete blocks and supported by 250 columns, the base extends to 45 meters below sea level.
