In 1992 we came to Zanzibar with a romantic idea of opening a hotel. We wanted to create a home, which was exotic and personalized, with high standards yet unmarred by the lack of personalization of chain hotels that we have experienced in our many years of traveling. Our family was based in East Africa and been in the hospitality business for over 30 years. With both "the daughters" Paulina and Nathalie studying hotel management at the prestigious school of Hotel management at Cornell University we were convinced that a destination as exotic and delightful as Zanzibar needed a luxury hotel that reflected the wonderful sense of mysticism and culture which we had fallen in love with.

And so we started to build Breezes. We located our favorite site, which we selected with a stringent criterion; a beautiful beach, far away from other hotel developments to ensure privacy for our guests and an area where we felt a connection with the people of the local village. We then proceeded to design and build our first hotel. We could write a book about our experiences, which in turn would have been a comedy. A piece of land with only sand and palm trees was turned into our vision. We installed a state of the art water desalinization plant and ran the hotel on generators and eventually assisted the local government in funding electrical connection to the main line, the road was partially tarmacked and then graded and in time a police station set up.

Those were the logistics, now to the design.

Zanzibar International Airport is also named Kisauni Airport, The airport is located approximately 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) south of Stone Town. It is a 50-minute drive on a good road to The Zanzibar Collection.

The airport is currently served on a daily basis from all major East African airports such as Kilimanjaro Airport, Nairobi Airport, Arusha Airport, Mombasa Airport and Dar-es-Salaam Airport from which you can connect to all major carriers to Europe, Asia and the US.

There is a major expansion underway at the moment with a new airport under construction expected to be completed in the coming year.

Very close to the hotel, the eco-friendly Bamburi Nature trail lies across the creek that separates the island of Mombasa from the north coast of Kenya, crossing the Nyali area. The Trail is a somewhat unique development in that huge tracts of land were carved up to supply raw material for the cement factory - old coral. Conservation issues are hugely important nowadays. These areas are no longer used by the factory and instead have been given back to nature. Assisted in part by the factory itself this area has been re-developed - and now covers many acres of pools, trees, grasses, and lately - fauna. This is an ongoing process and as time passed more animals resulting in a pleasant environment once degraded.

The hotel is situated on the North Eastern coast of Zanzibar, and approximately 45 minutes from the airport in Stonetown. Azanzi is a luxury boutique beach hotel which boasts 35 rooms comprising of 8 suites, 12 luxury suites, 9 villas, and 6 deluxe villas.

The central guest entertainment areas offer guests multi level viewing decks, well stocked curio shop, azure swimming pool, bar and dining area - maximizing the sublime view of the majestic and tranquil Indian Ocean, and powder-white beach's scattered with palm trees.
